Donbass

Germany, Ukraine, France, Netherlands, Romania 2018 | 121 minutes | Ukrainian, Russian | Hebrew, English subtitles

In the Donbass region in eastern Ukraine, a hybrid war rages. Taking advantage of the war between armies, insurgent gangs perpetuate crime, until robbery and murder become routine. In the background, the propaganda machine is hard at work to convince the masses that the war will bring peace and compassion. Through thirteen tension-ridden chapters, the film takes us on an adventurous journey within the depths of the conflict zone and life-threatening events. The “absurd, grotesque, comical—even incomprehensible—events are factual and those who experience them find it hard to believe that they are part of their lives,” says director Sergei Loznitsa, winner of the Best Director in the Un Certain Regard Competition at Cannes.
