The Shagrir family has been awarding prizes to young filmmakers since 1981. Many directors have received this recognition for their work, including Dina Zvi-Riklis, Benny Torati, Shemi Zarhin, Dannah Nayblat, Ran Tal, Dan and Noit Geva, Ruth Walk, Dani Menkin, Netali Braun, and Rana Abu Fraihah. The awards are given in memory of Aliza and Micha Shagrir by their sons, Oron and Hagai.

Aliza Shagrir was a film editor for Israeli television, where she edited news reports, dramas, and documentary films. In October 1980, during the holiday of Simchat Torah, Aliza was killed in a terrorist attack by a bomb that was planted outside of the synagogue on Copernic Street in Paris.

Micha Shagrir, one of the most important documentary film directors in Israel, directed and produced hundreds of films, series, and television programs for over fifty years. He founded and managed Kastel Films, one of the largest production companies in Israel, and served in a wide range of public positions: He served as the first Chairman of the Board for the Sam Spiegel Film School, Chair of the Israeli Film Fund, Chair of the Jerusalem Khan Theater, and more.
