This group show presents short films, videos, and photographs from the 1970s, a decade during which performance, body art, and video art emerged in Israel. Experimenting within these media, young artists explored new ways of relating to time and space, and to the performativity of memory by invoking the past in the here and now. Far from fitting to the codes of collective memory, the artists document alternative, personal and often fragile, practices of remembrance. They primarily use the body as a tool to reincarnate and reconstruct ephemerally, what seemed to have vanished. The works often express the confrontation of shared traumas, like the Holocaust and the Yom Kippur War, with identity and gender matters, as well as the artists’ personal experiences. This show highlights how the emergence of artistic forms can reactivate specific images, actions, and wounds from the past, and reveal visual constellations that are beyond time and categories. Here, video is neither a simple documentation tool nor “the postmodern medium par excellence” (Fredric Jameson, 1990), but a language of memory, of daily happenings occurring in the present time
