A small Hungarian village in August 1945, during the post-WWII Russian occupation. The festive atmosphere surrounding preparations for the clerk’s daughter’s wedding is tainted when two strangers in black appear at the train station: Orthodox Jews carrying a mysterious trunk. Some fear they have come to claim their lawful inheritance; others, that they herald mass immigration. But most of all, the Jews’ return means facing past crimes and confessing sins. Authentic period reconstruction, reserved dialogues, resonating soundtrack, and poetic black-and-white cinematography combine to effectively build tension, rendering a touching and powerful film.
