Lover for a Day

Having just separated from her boyfriend, heartbroken Jeanne knocks on her father’s door. But her warm welcome is matched by a baffling discovery: her father’s young new and passionate girlfriend is his student, and Jeanne’s age. From this point, the drama unfolds in director Phillipe Garrel’s unique style, and in typical French form: mundane dialogues are embedded with philosophical gems, romantic love is a supreme value, sex is a topic for dinner conversation, and infidelity, an option to consider. The film’s stunning black and white cinematography and poignant narration take viewers back to another film era, while firmly remaining in the present. The film premiered at Cannes this year to critical acclaim.
