Olivia (Marina Fois), a famous Parisian writer, leads a writing workshop with students from different backgrounds in the quaint village of La Ciotat. Their objective is to collaborate on the writing of a crime thriller, but for Antoine, who aspires to deal with contemporary issues, Olivia’s direction is too nostalgic. Attempts to appease Antoine cause tension and violence, which Olivia finds both intimidating and fascinating. Esteemed French director Laurent Cantet’s (winner of the Palme d’Or in 2008 for The Class) realistic style – breathing camera, emphasis on character, and many dramatic moments – produces a film in which “words become weapons” (The Guardian). Screened at Cannes Certain Regard opening ceremony.
