Il était une fois… Le procès de Viviane Amsalem

France, Israel 2016 | 52 minutes | French, Hebrew | Hebrew subtitles

This documentary, part of a series on seminal films by Franco-German TV network ARTE, follows the production of Ronit and Shlomi Elkabetz's Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem. Other episodes in the series took a look at classics such as Jules and Jim as well as contemporary movies such as The White Ribbon. The film presents the work and special relationship of the Elkabetz siblings, examining the language they developed in their three films, the relations between biography and art and the milieu they grew up in and their complex relationship with it. Naturally, the film also addresses the issue of religion in Israel and the religious establishment's control over marriage and family life.
