This film is part of a documentary series directed by Pawel Pawlikowski for the BBC about prominent literary figures in Eastern Europe. Pawlikowski chooses to focus on esteemed writer Benedict Yerofeyev, one of the mysterious key figures in the Samizdat movement (a clandestine Soviet printing and distribution method for dissident literature prohibited by the authorities). Pawlikowski films Yeofeyev toward the end of his life, as he is dying of throat cancer, and revisits the regions described in his most famous work Moscow-Pietushki.
