USA, China 2019 | 98 minutes | English, Mandarin | Hebrew, English subtitles
This film is “based on an actual lie,” as indicated in its opening title. Many Chinese families choose to hide medical diagnoses from their loved ones, in order not to cause them grief. Billy’s family decides to spare a diagnosis of terminal lung cancer from their grandmother. To allow the extended family to say their goodbyes together, they plan to throw a fake wedding in China. But Billy’s parents try to persuade her not to go, afraid that the sentimental granddaughter will spill the beans. Director Lulu Wang, who adapted her personal story for the screen, brilliantly casts rapper/actress Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians) in the lead role. This critically-acclaimed, intelligent, touching, and humorous drama, was one of the most talked-about films at the latest Sundance FF.
