A Gentle Creature

France, Germany, Lithuania, Netherlands 2017 | 143 minutes | Russian | Hebrew subtitles

A woman living alone in a remote Russian village is forced to leave the safety of her home when a mysterious package – stamped “return to sender” – arrives for her imprisoned husband. Her journey to the distant prison becomes an absurd odyssey into Russia’s heartless darkness.  While seeking justice, she must face a violent and aggressive world. Esteemed Ukrainian filmmaker, Sergei Loznitsa, is renowned for his many documentaries and two exemplary features – My Joy (2010) and In the Fog (2013). Recently screened at the Cannes Official Competition, A Gentle Creature is a profound allegory on contemporary Russia, at once an ambitious, challenging, and satisfying work.
