Agnus Dei

France, Poland 2016 | 115 minutes | French, Polish, Russian | English, Hebrew subtitles

Poland, 1945. A French Red Cross doctor on a humanitarian mission discovers a number of pregnant nuns at a nearby convent in need of medical care. This drama, based on a true story, deals with the crisis of faith that arises when the house of God is desecrated by the horrors of war.

The new film by Anne Fontaine (Coco before Chanel) is remarkable for its excellent performances and cinematographer Caroline Champetier's baroque visual style. Following its screening at the Sundance Festival, Justin Chang, Variety's chief film critic, praised the film "for the tact, intelligence and fine-grained character detail with which it examines every moral crevice of an unthinkable scenario."
