Winnie Mandela has been branded in the pages of history as an offensive, or at the very least, controversial figure. For the 27 years of Nelson Mandela’s imprisonment, Winnie was at the forefront of the anti-apartheid struggle, and took extreme measures in encouraging her people to protest the cruel government. But while her husband was crowned a national hero, Winnie continued to be demonized and humiliated in the international media. Filmmaker Pascale Lamche re-examines Winnie’s story to better understand the true nature of events. She uses previously unseen archival footage and interviews to trace a complex and intriguing portrait of a woman who is undoubtedly one of the most influential and misunderstood of our age.
