Documentary Creation in a Post-Truth Era

Conference by the Israeli Documentary Forum and the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute

14:30 Opening Remarks: Prof. Shai Lavi, Director of the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute, Dr. Noa Regev, CEO, The Jerusalem Cinematheque, Prof. Avner Faingulernt Chairman of the Israeli Documentary Forum

14:45-15:45 First Session: Get your cell phones out. Open your story!

How do you tell a “real” story in a post-truth era? Does the use of non-film materials increase the “authenticity” of the documentary, or make it look amateurish? Is the creation of the intimate, family doc a solution to the “corporate-like” film issue?

Moderator:  Avner Faingulernt

Participants: Julie Shles, Tali Shemesh, Dr. Yael Shenker

15:45-16:45 Second Session: “Who Tells the Story?”

In an era in which the biography and origin of the narrator appear as important as the story itself, many documentaries are trying to find their voice and refrain from dealing with explosive issues that have no meaning to them. Does this situation serve or restrict documentary cinema?

Moderator: Osnat Trabelsi

Participants: Dr. Avi Shilon, Jasmine Kainy, David Deri

16:45-17:45  Third Session: Documentary vs. Journalism

When public confidence in the press deteriorates, documentary cinema succeeds in sweeping the masses and create real change. Hundreds of investigative reports against Michael Jackson and R. Kelly have not been able to bring about as much change as did the two-documentary series “Leaving Neverland” and “Surviving Kelly.” .... Is this a revolution?

Moderator: Avner Shavit

Participants: Mika Timor, Yotam Feldman, Omri Assenheim
