Four years after presenting Volcano at the Festival, Guatemalan director Jayro Bustamante returns to Jerusalem with his new film, Tremors, which premiered at the Berlinale this year. Paolo, a 40-year-old Guatemalan, is a devout evangelist and married father of two. It is not surprising then, that his family struggles when he announces that he has fallen in love with a man. Despite their objections, Paolo moves in with his lover Francisco, to an extremely different social environment. But his conservative family is determined to do everything to help him “heal.” Bustamante takes a familiar issue and treats it with admirable sensitivity, while infusing the film with impressive visual qualities and meticulous performances by the actors.
