In Vienna at the onset of the twentieth century, a young woman falls in love with a gifted pianist. She rebels against her parents’ plans to marry her off to a military officer, gives birth to her lover’s son, ultimately marries the officer, but her feelings continue to torment her. Based on the novel by Stephen Zweig, Max Ophüls created an unforgettable Hollywood melodrama, now featured in a newly restored copy.
