Infinite Football

Romanian director Corneliu Porumboiu’s documentary follows Laurenţiu whose life is dedicated to inventing a sophisticated version of soccer based on a firm belief that to make the game fair, its rules must be changed. Rooted in a childhood trauma, this is his life’s work. Every moment away from his grey office is spent examining and updating his innovations. As the minutes pass and the monologues grow longer, this unique film becomes both increasingly absurd and lucid. Although Laurenţiu does not take his eye off the ball, it becomes evident that his hidden ambitions have little to do with sports: he longs for compassion, understanding, solidarity, and perhaps even, a revolution.
