Exile

France, Cambodia 2016 | 77 minutes | French | English, Hebrew subtitles

Three years after The Missing Picture won the Un Certain Regard Award at Cannes, director Rithy Panh returned to the French Riviera with Exile. In his new film, the Cambodian-French filmmaker continues his account of his life as a boy under the brutal Khmer Rouge regime, which murdered many of his relatives in the late 1970s. Panh examines the revolutionary ideology and contemplates the gap between his point of view as a teenager and his current perspective. His approach is more abstract and intellectual this time, as he weaves together art imagery, voiceover narration and archival propaganda materials produced by the dictatorship.
