Over the past two decades, Mia Hansen-Løve has consolidated her status at the forefront of contemporary European cinema through a series of lyrical films, such as All is Forgiven, Goodbye First Love, and Things to Come. Hansen-Løve’s narratives almost always involve a character facing transitions. However, it often seems as though their main role is to sustain a particular mood or atmosphere exquisitely formed by the director’s artistic hands. This new film follows a French war correspondent recently released from Isis captivity in Syria, who travels to his childhood home in India. There, in Goa, he meet’s his godfather’s young daughter, Maya. Despite the age and culture gaps, they develop a romantic relationship.
