The year is 1981 and South Africa’s white minority government is embroiled in a conflict on the southern Angolan border. Like all white boys over 16, Nicholas must complete two years of compulsory military service to defend the Apartheid regime. The threat of communism and the so-called "black danger" is at an all-time high. But the main challenge facing our young man is the military brutality that escalates as his surprising relationship with a fellow soldier unfolds. In his fourth feature, Oliver Hermanus (The Endless River) combines his meticulous directing with precise music (including pieces by Vivaldi and Bach), impressive cinematography, rich visuals, and of course, the moving performance by Kai Luke Brummer in the lead role.
