Roy Andersson returned to the Venice Festival exactly five years after winning the Golden Lion (for A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence), this time, as recipient of the Best Director award for About Endlessness. The 77 year-old Swedish director solidified his status as one of the veteran and renowned masters of his generation with his unique style exemplified in his new film with an unusual mix of spectacular artistic design, a subdued color scheme, static camera, dry black humor, and melancholic romance. Within this mix, he portrays a series of short vignettes that are not necessarily connected by plot, but all expose the world at its most absurd, while singing a praise song to the love and grace that it holds. Albert Einstein said that only the universe and human stupidity are endless; Andersson proves that cinematic beauty is also the same.
