Golda Maria

France 2020 | 115 minutes | French | Hebrew, English subtitles

Golda Maria Sobelman miraculously evaded death during World War II and lived to tell her story. She lived a long life till the age of 102 and when she was 84, she sat for eight hours in front of her grandson’s camera, French producer Patrick Sobelman, and for the first time, recounted her life’s story. Two years ago, her grandson and his son, Hugo, decided to turn the raw footage into a two-hour documentary film. Like Shoah by Claude Lanzmann, the film uses almost no archival footage, but relies solely on the present - an enlightening and moving testimony of a woman who was forced, at a young age, to experience brutal atrocities, face impossible dilemmas, and sacrifice all she held dear. A woman who witnessed history in the making, and due to her extraordinary emotional strength, survived to share it with others.
