The year is 1993. After her parents’ death, 6-year-old Frida is sent from Barcelona to spend the summer at her aunt and uncle’s – now her guardians – in rural Catalonia. Although surrounded by her family and the wonders of nature, she’s finding it hard to cope with her loss and adapt to the new reality of her life away from the city, with new parents and a clingy younger sister. In her first feature, Spanish director Carla Simón employs a gentle, naturalistic cinematic style to reveal the challenges of childhood and the complexity of her characters’ relationships. Winner of Best First Feature and Generation K-Plus competitions, Berlinale 2017.
