When Menashe, a pleasant ultra-Orthodox Jew from Brooklyn, is widowed, he finds himself in serious conflict with Halachic rigidity. Although determined to fulfil his responsibility as a father, Jewish law forbids him to raise a child alone. The boy is placed with his strict uncle, leaving Menashe heartbroken. But when the Rabbi permits father and son to spend a week together, Menashe is finally given an opportunity to prove his worth. Joshua Weinstein’s first feature, screened at the Sundance and Berlin film festivals to critical and audience acclaim, is a sensitive, authentic drama – complete with Yiddish dialogue – that explores the nature of faith and the cost of parenthood.
