How to Talk to Girls at Parties sounds like an inviting tutorial, but set against the background of late 70s punkland, exurban Britain, this tale holds more than a few surprises. Enn (Alex Sharp) seems a typical wide-eyed teenage boy, fixated on getting a band together and cruising girls. When he crashes Boadicea's (Nicole Kidman) gonzo rave, he chats up Zan (Elle Fanning), the story seems headed toward a coming-of-age rom-com, but it takes a screeching turn, literally into another dimension. Without unveiling spoilers, suffice it to say, interplanetary shenanigans are involved. John Cameron Mitchell brings the absurdist wit and whimsy from his celebrated film Hedwig and the Angry Inch to this adaptation of a Neil Gaimin graphic novel-style short story.
