When the doctor diagnoses her stomach ache as a “tropical virus,” and although she has had her tubes tied, Paola’s mother is pregnant. And the virus becomes our hero, the youngest child of an unusual family from Quito through whose eyes we experience the ups and downs of her adolescence. Tropical Virus is an animated adaptation of Power Paola’s graphic novel, featuring women of all ages and social classes facing a variety of challenges: family, trust, immigration, and the desire to find their place in the world. Despite its rather loose plotline, the film’s visual intensity is riveting—it showers us with brilliant images that complement the emotional experience it evokes: sophisticated, naïve, and amusing.
