Much has been written and spoken about Frank Zappa, and there have also been quite a few films about his life. But so far, no documentary film has presented a comprehensive and thorough portrait of the legendary musician, who was also a filmmaker, Dadaist, philosopher, intellectual, and sharp critic of American society. Zappa passed away in 1993, at the age of 52, leaving behind a phenomenal legacy (over 60 albums!), four children, and countless fans in every possible country. Director Alex Winter and his team gained access to a hidden treasure: Zappa's private archives which include vast amounts of unreleased material such as rare musical recordings, documentation of performances, interviews, family films, and unfinished projects. The result is a fascinating and enlightening film.
