Bickels [Socialism]

Celebrated artist Heinz Emigholz offers a captivating view of 22 buildings located throughout Israel designed by legendary kibbutz architect, Shmuel Bickels: dining halls, children’s houses, agricultural buildings, auditoriums. These neglected architectural gems have lost their lustre over the years, and their condition reflects the collapse of the kibbutz movement. As a prologue, photographs of the “Casa do Povo,” the iconic Jewish cultural center in São Paolo designed by Bickels; as epilogue – the story of “Vio Nova,” the unique kibbutz founded in Crimea. In his distinctive style – unnarrated, static shots of the structures from various angles – Emigholz manages to capture the essence of Bickels’s spirit.
