Sometime in the not too far future, after humans have environmentally devastated the Earth, Aniara, a massive space shuttle, transports human beings to a new colony on Mars. But an unexpected collision sets Aniara off course and it now has no control over the length of the journey. The passengers soon begin to realize that their chances of reaching a safe haven while still alive are scarce. Swedish duo Pella Kågerman and Hugo Lilja’s debut film, a contemporary adaptation of Nobel laureate Swedish poet Harry Martinson’s 1956 epic poem, is a virtually grim portrait of humanity. This hypnotic, mesmerizing work, makes impressive use of sci-fi tropes and is a pungent commentary on human nature.
