The legend of Undine, the water virgin, has been the source of inspiration for many great artists. The latest is Christian Petzold, the most interesting filmmaker working in Germany today. Petzold transplanted the legend into modern-day Berlin, while preserving all of the elements of the myth – the connection to place, love, and water, but with a very important twist, because Petzold's Undine seeks to break free from the chains of the old legend and yoke of the past, and pursues a different future. Petzold returns to actors Paula Beer and Franz Rogowski who worked with him with great success on his previous film, Transit, and if anyone suspected that he has abandoned his interest in the German epic from the female point of view will find that both contemporary Germany and a female protagonist play central roles in this film.
